Chief U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell of Washington, D.C., held Andrew Miller in contempt on Friday, the Washington Post reports. She made the contempt ruling Friday after a closed hearing in Washington.
Miller's attorney Paul Kamenar told CNN that they intend to appeal the order to appear before the grand jury, and he said the first step would be for him not to appear.
Miller's argument mirrored a similar claim made recently by President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly criticized Mueller's investigation into ties between Russian Federation and his campaign as a "witch hunt".

Miller served briefly as an assistant to Stone during the 2016 presidential campaign, reportedly handling media interviews.
But Mueller's subpoena of Miller and other Stone associates recently suggests he is now focusing on whether Stone may have had knowledge in advance about the damaging leaks of Democratic documents that Guccifer provided to Wikileaks in the months running up to the November 2016 presidential election. Stone said that he was "highly confident she will testify truthfully if called upon to do so".
Stone, a longtime confidant of Trump's, has always been a person of interest in the special counsel's probe: Several of his associates have been subpoenaed in the investigation in recent weeks.
Miller plans to appeal. The Russian company, which was accused by the special counsel of bankrolling a vast online campaign to influence the 2016 election, argued Mueller does not have the power he has used in the executive branch because he is not appointed by the President nor confirmed by the Senate.
Miller's lawyer in June said he would seek to quash the subpoena.
