That's a tough position to take, considering both Pine and Hemsworth have continued to build their considerable stardom since 2016, with Pine releasing Wonder Woman and Hemsworth doing Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Infinity War.
Star Trek 4 is scheduled to be directed by S.J. Clarkson from a script by J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramounts talks with both Pine and Hemsworth have fallen through over salary issues.
Obviously, if the two sides are unable to resolve the conflicts, the future of the Star Trek film franchise would look massively different.
It was announced that Chris Pine would return to the role of Captain Kirk, which he's played in the three previous films and Chris Hemsworth to return as his (possibly time-traveling father) George Kirk, a role he last played in the 2009 reboot, following the release of Star Trek Beyond in July of 2016.

Brad Pitt: I've given Angelina Jolie $9m since split
Just a day before, Jolie had accused Pitt of not paying "meaningful" child support ever since their 2016 split. Pitt and Jolie have three sons and three daughters, ages 17 and under.
China Customs: China crude imports rise, but capped by weak ‘teapot’ demand
Shipping analyst MSI says the liner industry is awaiting the impact of the potential trade war between the US and China. Beijing has stepped up efforts, so far without success, to recruit governments including Germany and France as allies.
Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, and John Cho are all reportedly expected to return, and I'm sure there's an unbelievable story to be told with Uhura, Spock, Dr. McCoy, Scotty, and Sulu. The new Star Trek films have only grossed around $350-$450 million each, and not the $700 million-plus that Marvel and DC films have made at the box office.
The actors claim that they had deals in place for the fourth Kelvin Timeline movie, but the studios want them to take pay cuts because of the "mediocre" performance of Star Trek Beyond. Of course, there's also the as yet untitled Star Trek 4, which appears to be inching closer and closer to production.
THR reports that one insider says the companies actually lost money on the movie. Do you think there's still hope for Pine and Hemsworth to return?
J.J. Abrams' 2009 franchise restarter Star Trek turned in $386 million, while 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness is the top earner so far, with $467 million. The actor signed for Star Trek 4 even before he shot Star Trek Beyond in 2015. He knows how to play a leading man in a big budget genre film, and he'd allow Star Trek to keep its recommended Chris quota intact. Paramount proper now has no comment on this situation.
