USA senator Rand Paul called for increased dialogue with Moscow and invited a delegation of Russian lawmakers to Washington DC during the Republican's visit to the Russian capital on Monday.
"Over the last few weeks, I've crisscrossed the district talking to constituents about the many challenges we face right here in Senate District 16", Johnson wrote.
Kosachev said the visit is especially valuable as some US representatives are attempting to treat all contacts with Russian politicians as toxic ones.
"Engagement is vital to our national security and peace around the world", said Paul in a statement.
The delegation met the Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs Konstantin Kosachev and Vice Speaker of the Federation Council Vladimir Lukin.
Paul announced that he had "invited members of the foreign affairs committee of Russian Federation to come to the United States to meet with us in Washington", after meeting with Konstantin Kosachev, chairman of the foreign affairs committee in Russia's upper house. "Meanwhile, my Trump-defending opponent Don Huffines chose to go on a Moscow adventure this week with Rand Paul instead, to "improve parliamentary relations" with Russian Federation".

Eight prominent USA intelligence groups, including the CIA, FBI, NSA, Justice Department and Department of Homeland Security, independently concluded that Russian Federation did meddle in the 2016 elections.
It was "opposition research", Trump said, not collusion.
Paul argued that "those who believe in either country that we should not have diplomacy are greatly mistaken". "It does not mean we don't have differences". I think this is incredibly important.
Mr. Paul was the only lawmaker on the trip, which was financed by the Cato Institute, a leading libertarian research organization in Washington. Trump later walked back the remark and said he trusted the US intelligence community's assessment Moscow did interfere.
When asked by CNN whether the issue of Russian interference came up, Paul said he had "general discussions about a lot of issues".
Kosachev said that the meeting could happen as early as this fall.
