After the initial quake, further aftershocks - including one just 1km off the coast of the island - caused further destruction, toppling buildings and causing injuries and deaths.
The north of Lombok has been devastated by the magnitude-7.0 quake that struck on Sunday night, killing more than 100 people, seriously injuring more than 230 and destroying thousands of buildings.

"We don't know for sure how many people are alive under the rubble", BNPB spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho told reporters.

Roads between villages such Kayangan and Gangga in the far north of the island were cracked wide open - in some places by more than a foot - bridges have suffered extensive damage, huge trees have been ripped out of the ground and evidence of landslides was frequent.

Officials said more than 2000 people had been evacuated from the three Gili islands, where fears of another tsunami spread. In December 2004, a magnitude-9.1 natural disaster off Sumatra island triggered a tsunami that killed 230,000 people in a dozen countries.

Rescuers on Tuesday resumed the desperate search for survivors‚ and to recover the bodies of victims in the rubble of houses‚ mosques and schools destroyed in the latest disaster. Many got out but dozens were trapped, he said.
