All but three of the astronauts are space flight veterans.
Boeing's first Starliner crew will include a former NASA astronaut who commanded the last shuttle flight in 2011, Chris Ferguson, who's now a Boeing employee. Now the pair will be among those who usher in a new era for NASA.
In 2019, SpaceX's Crew Dragon capsule and Boeing's CST-100 Starliner are both scheduled to blast off on test flights with NASA astronauts on board. Mann's flight with Boeing will be her first to space.
On the SpaceX vessel will be astronauts Doug Hurley, Victor Glover, Robert Behnken and Michael Hopkins.
SpaceX is shooting for a test flight without passengers in November and a crew flight in April.
His father, Ian Ferguson, a computer salesman who died of cancer in 1981, prominently displayed in their house a framed autograph of Alan Shepard, the first American in space. It will be Glover's first mission.
American astronauts haven't launched from the US since 2011, and the first commercial company to make that happen first will undoubtedly receive accolades.
"The 7,000 women and men of SpaceX understand what a sacred honor it was for us to be part of this program and for us to fly you", Shotwell told the astronaut crews.
Boeing's and SpaceX's commercial spacecraft may also open the space station - and more broadly, Earth orbit - to more privately-funded visitors and spaceflight participants from countries that do not have their own domestic crewed spacecraft and rockets.
Ferguson, a 56-year-old graduate of Archbishop Ryan High School and Drexel University, may get his shot to be first next year.
NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine announced eight current NASA astronauts, several of whom have been to space before, as well as bringing a ninth former astronaut who now works for Boeing on stage.
The unemployment rate fell to 3.9% in July
Although the labor force participation rate was unchanged at 62.9%, it increased for the prime working-age cohort (25-54 years). The gauge includes part-time workers who'd prefer a full-time position and people who want a job but aren't actively looking.
Mendocino Complex Fire scorches over 157000 acres, more homes evacuated
The two fires cover an area larger than the wildfire that damaged parts of Redding, California last week and continues to grow. Caltrans says to drive with extra caution if you do take this route, as fire crews are still working in the area.
Chinese professor missing after radio interview interrupted by police
Apparently unmoved, they close in on Sun as he asked them: "What are you doing?" It's illegal for you to come to my home. Liu died a year ago , the first Nobel victor to die in custody since Nazi Germany.
Eric Boe: Boe was born in Florida and grew up in Atlanta.
Eric Boe: Like many astronauts, Boe became an astronaut after a stint as an Air Force fighter pilot.
The SpaceX Crew Dragon that will be used for Demo-1 arrived at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in July.
The successful flight marked the scheduled end of the 30-year space shuttle program.
Doug Hurley: Hurley came to NASA from the Marine Corps in 2000. "This is a test pilot's dream".
Meanwhile, the U.S. Government Accountability Office recommended NASA pursue a backup plan for getting astronauts to the ISS, as its contract with Russian Federation to send them to the station via Soyuz launches in Kazakhstan ends at the close of 2019. He has flown to space twice before this, both on space shuttle missions. He returns to NASA after retiring in 2011.
In this illustration, a Boeing CST-100 Starliner spacecraft is shown in low-Earth orbit.
Bob Behnken: Behnken is a native of St. Ann, Missouri. He is an Air Force colonel with a doctorate in engineering. He flew aboard Space Shuttle Endeavor in 2008 and 2010. He's performed six spacewalks totaling almost 40 hours. Behnken flew on Endeavour twice, STS-123 and STS-130, while Hurley was pilot on Endeavour for STS-127 and Atlantis on STS-135.
Josh Cassada: Cassada grew up in White Bear Lake, Minnesota. He was selected as an astronaut in 2013. It'll be his first spaceflight, though he has a wide range of experience with combat missions and testing aircraft.
Suni Williams: Williams grew up in Needham, Massachusetts. She is a retired Navy captain and test pilot and was selected as a NASA astronaut in 1998. He's spent almost 29 days in space. The cargo missions started in 2012. He also serves as a Navy commander, naval aviator and was a test pilot. It won't be the first time SpaceX trounces Boeing.
