The person with the first human case of West Nile Virus to be identified in Manitoba this year is a child.
The Southwest District Health Department said that the man lives in Canyon County, but may have been exposed in Adams County as well.
West Nile virus is a potentially serious illness that is usually spread to animals and humans through the bite of an infected mosquito.
"These traps are tested weekly from June to September and with this recent confirmation of West Nile virus activity, we are increasing our efforts in the area surrounding the positive traps by looking for breeding sites and re-treating catch basins with larvicide", Paul Callanan, Director of Health Protection at the Region of Peel, said in a statement released Thursday.
Last week, Maryland health officials reported the first confirmed case of a West Nile-infected adult in that state.
