With the increase, JetBlue will become the first major airline to charge $30 for a traveler's first checked bag.
The airlines are raising the fee for the first checked bag by five-dollars to 30-dollars and by 20-dollars for the second bag to 50-dollars.
According to Lauren Stewart, WestJet Spokesperson, the increase in baggage fees will "offset higher costs in today's challenging and competitive market, while continuing to offer competitive prices for" guests.
Carry-on bags and one personal item are still free.
Other large USA carriers including Delta Air Lines, United Continental and American Airlines charge $25 for the first piece of luggage checked, while Southwest Airlines is the sole large US airline that doesn't assess a fee for one piece of checked luggage.
The price increase affects travellers on domestic and worldwide flights.

Even though JetBlue fees are increasing, flyers have some ways to get around the fee for checked bags. It could make sense to buy an upgraded option if the difference is fare would be lower than the cost of checking your bags. The airline first started charging a fee for checked bags in 2015.
The new fees are listed on the airline's online baggage fees chart.
That move left Southwest as the only carrier offering two free checked bags.
