Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 105 miles, forecasters said.
Hurricane Lane is poised to weaken and track south of Hawaii this week, but is expected to generate rough surf and rip currents, the Central Pacific Hurricane Center said Monday.
Forecasters noted that they are awaiting data collected by the NOAA Aircraft Operation Center and the U.S. Air Force Reserves 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, which departed late Sunday evening, to help improve the forecast track.
The now Category 3 storm's westward motion is expected to continue through early Tuesday, however, a turn toward the west-northwest is expected to start late Tuesday. A tropical storm or hurricane watch could be issued for some parts of the island chain later today. The hurricane was located about 735 miles east-southeast of Hilo. The watch will go into effect from Wednesday morning through Friday afternoon.
Forecasters had believed the storm would track south of the Hawaiian Islands, based on initial projections.
Forecasters add that regardless of Lane's eventual track and intensity, computer models are pointing to an extremely moist tropical airmass moving over the islands beginning Wednesday through the end of the week, which could lead to very heavy rainfall in some areas.

According to the forecast track, the center of Lane will pass close to Hawaii and Maui counties on Thursday.
The NWS said: "Surf may increase to warning levels for east - and/or south-facing shores later Tuesday or Wednesday as Lane progresses westward south of the state".
Maintaining strength overnight, Lane remains a Category 3 hurricane and a possible threat to the islands later this week.
According to the CPHC, large swells generated by Lane will impact the Hawaiian Islands this week, producing large and risky surf, as well as strong currents, along some shorelines.
A large swell generated by Lane was expected to reach Hawaii island and East Maui.
Also in effect for waters around Hawaii Island is a tropical storm watch because of strong winds associated with Lane.
