This much was revealed by Xaviant Games' Director of Operations, Josh Van Veld, with the studio head explaining in the video-recorded message below that in an effort to win back fans, the studio would now pivot its efforts on reviving the first game as a free-to-play title after expunging The Culling 2 from marketplaces. We weren't happy with how you felt about the game.
(Chris won his first round after the only other player in the match went AFK.) Faced with that, and a powerful backlash from the existing Culling fan base, developer Xaviant has announced a dramatic change of direction: The game will be shuttered and removed from sale, and refunds will be issued to everyone.
"It's definitely been hard to deal with the launch of The Culling 2, but it's been valuable for us in terms of making us look inward and look backward and see how we got here as a studio and as a team", Van Veld said.
"I want to apologize because when we got to the end of our early access run you weren't happy with the state of the game", Van Veld said. "We weren't happy with our relationship with the community, we weren't happy with how you felt about the game, we weren't happy with the game ourselves, but we didn't see a path forward. So, we turned it off and moved on to something else, and in retrospect that was a mistake". And even though it took them a while to realize, it's the best - and right - thing to do right now.
Xaviant is now contacting Sony, Microsoft, and Valve to pull the game and ensure people who bought it get refunds. It's also interesting to note that, while the numbers are tiny for both games, The Culling remains far more popular than its sequel: There are at this moment 35 people playing The Culling, while The Culling 2 hit its peak today with two.
