It was a tough race, but the Equalizer 2 brought in $35.8 million in its opening weekend debut.
The weekend's other big new opener, "Unfriended: Dark Web", also a sequel, scared up $3.5 million for a ninth-place start.
The numbers aren't great for either movie in a relatively quiet summer weekend in theaters, but it's about what was expected for each, with Equalizer slightly beating out its own projections. "Skyscraper" may have felt like a reboot of "The Towering Inferno" and "Die Hard", but technically it and "Sorry to Bother You" are the only non-sequels on the list above.
