Donald Trump has a new payment plan in mind for his border wall, and he is willing to shut down the federal government in order to get it.
Meanwhile, Ryan and McConnell, facing the November midterm election that could result in changes of power in the House and Senate, are leery about a government shutdown that could prove unpopular in the weeks ahead. A funding fight also could prove a distraction from Republican efforts in the Senate to confirm Trump Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh by October 1.
Trump's tweet came several days after the government said more than 1,800 children separated at the US-Mexico border have been reunited with parents and sponsors after a federal judge ordered the reunions.
The $5 billion is well above the $1.6 billion in the Senate version of the bill, which would finance the Homeland Security Department.
