She said her son, Michael, had been visiting Pompano Beach, not far from Fort Lauderdale, when his friends made a decision to bury him in the sand.
Since weeks, Michael has been battling with the parasites and is on a series of medication and steroids to cure the infection.
Dumas added: 'We have been to the pediatrician 4 times, to a dermatologist and have a follow up appointment today. However, serious infections can result in blood loss leading to anemia, abdominal pain, diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss and fatigue. If an infected person defecates outside, or the feces of that person is used as fertilizer, eggs can hatch in soil or sand. Some species of hookworm that typically infect cats and dogs can be transmitted to people through contaminated sand or soil, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Michael was not the only one in his group to have been infected. They worked hard for the majority of the trip, but one day they were allowed to relax in the sun on Pompano Beach. The family also visited a dermatologist, who attempted to freeze the worms. The teen has reportedly been left home-bound by the infection and needs to soak in bleach water each day. She added that he now can not wear shoes and needs to soak the infected area in bleach water every day.

She adding that she called the Health Department for the City of Pompano Beach to tell them what happened to Michael.
"The Health Department in Pompano Beach said 'Everyone knows to wear shoes on the beach because you can get parasites.' I assured them everyone does NOT KNOW THAT!"
