Facing withering criticism over Monday's deferential joint news conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, President Trump asserted Tuesday that he misspoke when he said that Russia had not interfered with the USA presidential election.
Reading from prepared remarks, Trump said he misspoke during the press conference when he said he didn't see any reason why Russian Federation would have been behind the meddling.
Trump, who had been given numerous opportunities to publicly rebuke Putin in Helsinki, praised the Russian leader during the news conference for his "strong and powerful" denial of the conclusions of USA intelligence agencies that the Russian state meddled in the election.
"They said they think it's Russian Federation". There are a lot of people out there.
Trump met with Putin at a summit in Helsinki, Finland on Monday, both privately and publicly.
The encounter, which took place in Helsinki Monday, has been overshadowed by a subsequent joint press conference held by Presidents Trump and Putin. "I don't see any reason why it would be".
Mr Putin is 5ft7in, or 170cm, meaning Mr Trump towers over him at 6ft2in, or 190cm.

Trump maintained Tuesdays summit with Putin went "even better" than his meeting with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies. "I entered the meeting with the firm conviction that diplomacy and engagement is better than hostility and conflict", he said.
