The Guardians of the Galaxy cast members have expressed their "shock" at Disney's severing of ties with franchise writer-director James Gunn.
The cast of Guardians of the Galaxy has signed an open letter calling for Disney to reinstate James Gunn as director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. "I'd personally love to see him reinstated as director of Volume 3", he added, referencing the Marvel franchise's upcoming third installment.
You can read the entire signed statement below...
It says: "We fully support James Gunn".
A cynical observer would look at phrasing such as "we waited to think, pray, listen and discuss", and conclude that the cast members were instead waiting to assess public reactions and judge whether their support for Gunn would be met with applause or abuse.
Cast members of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise - which includes Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, and Bradley Cooper - penned an open letter in defense of director James Gunn, who was sacked earlier this month after old tweets deemed offensive by Disney were uncovered.
Gunn's firing over social-media posts has had a ripple effect in Hollywood, particularly since the tweets were surfaced by a right-wing, conspiracy theorist Mike Cernovich.
This is a really well-written statement, though the release of it a week after the fact, and well into public opinion swinging in Gunn's favor is a bit suspect. "James is likely not the last good person to be put on trial", the statement reads. The letter goes on to express the cast's wish that "Americans from across the political spectrum can ease up on the character assassinations and stop weaponizing mob mentality".

DJI Mavic 2 drone leak confirms Pro and Zoom models

The stars of Guardians of the Galaxy-Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Karen Gillan, Sean Gunn, Pom Klementieff, Chris Pratt, Michael Rooker and Zoe Saldana-published an open letter Monday in defense of writer/director James Gunn, in the hopes that he will be rehired for the next film.
Through two installments the franchise has brought in more than $1.5 billion USA in global box office, and much has been staked on the third film that would launch another decade, or more, of Marvel films.
While the letter supports Gunn, the cast members also say that they hope this is a lesson for us all about thinking before putting words out into the digital space.
The Guardians of the Galaxy have teamed up to fight their most formidable foe yet - the titanic Walt Disney Corporation.
"His story isn't over - not by a long shot", the statement says.
Gunn has apologized for the tweets, saying that his "words of almost a decade ago were, at the time, totally failed and unfortunate efforts to be provocative". I have regretted them for many years since - not just because they were stupid, not at all amusing, wildly insensitive, and certainly not provocative like I had hoped, but also because they don't reflect the person I am today or have been for some time. I don't anymore. I don't blame my past self for this, but I like myself more and feel like a more full human being and creator today.
Gunn has not commented on the cast letter.
