Wang said he had been under the impression that four rounds of high level talks in recent months between China and the United States had averted the trade war.
The figures come a week after the trade war between the two began, with the United States imposing tariffs on $34bn of Chinese goods, and China retaliating.
China's exports to the United States rose 13.6 percent in the first half of 2018 from a year earlier, while its imports from the USA rose 11.8 percent in the same period.
Analysts expect shipments growth to slow in the second half of the year, putting more strain on an economy already feeling the pinch from a multi-year debt battle that has driven up corporate borrowing costs.
"Still, we do not expect a plunge because those tariffs only targeted $34bn worth of goods which is fairly small compared to China's total trade", she said.
Last Friday, Trump rolled out 25% tariffs on $34 billion of Chinese goods.
Over the first six months of the year the surplus climbed to $133.8 billion as total two-way trade continued to expand despite the face-off. China said the two sides were not discussing restarting trade negotiations.
For January-June, it rose to $133.76 billion, compared with about $117.51 billion in the same period past year.
Trump has launched a barrage of "Section 301" trade tariffs, punishing what he says is China's theft of intellectual property and unfair industrial policies.

China's surplus with the USA hit a record high last month, data showed today.
But in a statement coming from the Chinese Commerce Ministry, The Asian nation said the surplus was overestimated and caused by America's own "domestic structural problems".
The new tariffs would kick in within 60 days.
"Targeting such a large amount of basic consumers will inevitably have an effect on USA inflation".
David Kuo, chief executive of the Motley Fool Singapore, said "US tariffs will increase the cost of Chinese imports but they are unlikely to deter USA consumers entirely".
However, a lower yuan would make it more expensive for China to import United States goods.
Imports grew 14.1 percent in June, customs said, missing analysts' forecast of a 20.8 percent growth, and compared with a 26 percent rise in May.
"So we would be back to square one", Mr Kuo said, with China exporting more to the USA than it buys from the country.
Trump's latest tariffs threat hammered global markets, while there are worries that his decision to pick fights with other key allies including Canada and the European Union could fuel an all-out global trade war.
