The suspect's vehicle crashed next to the store and he opened fire on the officers chasing him, before entering the Trader Joe's store as shoppers ran for cover, the Los Angeles Times said. Los Angeles police said the incident started with a shooting in the 1600 block of 32nd Street.
The incident broke out at approximately 3:30 p.m. CBS News reported that the suspect had shot his grandmother and girlfriend in South L.A. before police pursued him to Hyperion Avenue in Silver Lake.
