In his first remarks to the OAS as Secretary of State, Pompeo called on the foreign ministers and representatives of more than 30 member states to stand up for the Democratic principles they all agreed upon and kick out Venezuela in a vote Tuesday.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, center, straightens his tie after speaking during a session of the General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS), Monday, June 4, 2018, in Washington. "And it would send a powerful signal to the Maduro regime that only real elections will allow your government in the family of nations". A year ago, Venezuela said it would withdraw from the organization because of its attacks on the country's sovereignty, but the process will not take effect until next April.
Arreaza claimed the discussion point was not approved according to the corresponding legal procedures, because Venezuela as a member state rejected its inclusion in the agenda. Pompeo has labeled it a sham, and the United States and other nations have refused to recognize it.
"I am proud to say as president of the republic ... that I have taken the decision to retire our nation from the OAS, to liberate our country from interventionism, to liberate our country from so much illegality, so much abuse, we are free from the OAS and we will never return", Maduro said at the time.

Pompeo said OAS member states should apply new sanctions on Venezuela to further isolate it diplomatically after the May 20 election, in which Maduro's two most popular rivals were barred from standing. "You don't have moral authority of any kind to try to undermine our government".
Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza accused the USA of meddling with his country's internal affairs and imposing illegal sanctions against the Maduro regime.
Venezuela has said it is already leaving the OAS, announcing past year it would begin the withdrawal process.
He also denounced what he called an ongoing US aggression against Venezuela. "We are sovereign. "It gives Maduro justification when he says, 'We are going to be attacked by the United States, ' and it doesn't have impact on the protection of human rights".
