The 37-year-old reality show star made a personal plea on behalf of the 62-year-old grandmother who was given a life sentence in 1996 for a first-time nonviolent drug offense.
CNN's Jeremy Diamond says: "Kardashian-West brought a little of celebrity appeal to the case that has been gaining popularity online with calls for an act of clemency on the president's part and it appears her appeal was successful".
The president has also signaled that he could similarly favor lifestyle guru Martha Stewart, who went to jail for making false statements in an insider trading case, and commute the prison sentence of Rod Blagojevich, a former governor of IL convicted of corruption.
Kardashian-West has reacted to Trump's decision on Twitter. "Her commutation is inspirational & gives hope to so many others who are also deserving of a second chance".
The commutation comes days after Trump pardoned conservative commentator Dinesh D'Souza, who was convicted of a campaign finance violation, and granted a posthumous pardon to boxing's first black heavyweight champion, clearing Jack Johnson's name more than 100 years after what many saw as a racially charged conviction.

Johnson would have died behind bars without the presidents clemency.
"Ms. Johnson has accepted responsibility for her past behavior and has been a model prisoner over the past two decades", said the White House in a statement. The reasons are unclear.

"Despite receiving a life sentence, Alice worked hard to rehabilitate herself in prison, and act as a mentor to her fellow inmates".
Kim took to Twitter immediately after the news broke to share her happiness.

The White House noted that letters of support for clemency had been received from Johnson's warden, case manager and vocational training instructor.
