On Sunday, within hours of the trial results being presented at American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) 2018 meeting in Chicago, the 48-year-old emailed them to her doctor with this line: "This is good news for me".
A new medical study says that 70% of women diagnosed with one of the most common forms of breast cancer might not need chemotherapy treatment.
As part of the TAILORx study, women were given a 21-gene test from Genomic Health called Oncotype DX. Women with an RS of 10 or lower (1619, 17%) were in the ET arm and those with a RS of 26 or higher (1389, 14%) were in the CET arm. Almost 7,000 patients' scores fell into the middle range, between 11 and 25. The trial, which enrolled 10,273 women, aimed to clarify whether hormone therapy alone or together with chemotherapy is better for women with an RS of 11 to 25.
Patients were randomly assigned to receive hormone therapy or chemotherapy, followed by hormone therapy.
Among women with mid-range scores, the researchers concluded that overall there was no significant difference in the outcomes of those who had chemotherapy and those who didn't.
Brawley said that in addition to offering patients and doctors peace of mind about forgoing chemotherapy, the findings will prevent tens of thousands of breast cancer patients each year from the debilitating and harmful risks associated with the treatment, including hair loss, nausea, vomiting and being at risk for leukemia and congestive heart failure.
"The study should have a huge impact on doctors and patients", said Dr Kathy Albain, one of the main co-authors.

Eric M. Ascher, DO, is a third-year family medicine resident from NY working in the ABC News Medical Unit.
Dr Steven Rosenberg, chief of surgery at the National Cancer Institute, which led the trial, told the broadcaster that the therapy remained "highly experimental", but had the potential to transform cancer treatment. Since its establishment in 1996, over 15,000 people have participated in more than 350 cancer trials. Before the new treatment, doctors had given her three years to live.
According to the study, more than 20,000 women in the United Kingdom are diagnosed with hormone-receptor positive, HER2-negative, node-negative breast cancer annually.
"You shouldn't do chemo unless you have to", added Dr. Jack Jacoub, medical oncologist and medical director at the MemorialCare Cancer Institute at the Orange Coast Medical Center in California.
The success, reported in the journal Nature Medicine, is all the more remarkable because breast cancers, like prostate and ovarian cancer, have relatively few mutations, which makes them harder for the immune system to spot amid the body's healthy tissues.
Melinda Bachini, a former paramedic who lives in Billings, Montana, believes the treatment saved her life. They were then infused back into the patient. A patient's immune system will already be attacking the tumour, it's just losing the fight between white blood cells and cancer. A little boost can outweigh the risks of the treatment for these patients.
