A member of parliament in Russian Federation on Wednesday asked the country's women not to have sex with foreign fans arriving for the World Cup as they would risk becoming single mothers to mixed-race children, Reuters reported.
Tamara Pletnyova, head of the family, women and children's affairs committee, argued that even if these relationships led to marriage, women or their children would inevitably be taken overseas by the man.
Pletnyova claimed lessons should be learned from the USSR era when some local women became pregnant after having then-unusual relationships with foreigners at the Moscow Olympics in 1980. "They are abandoned, and that's it, they stay here with mum", she said.
Concerns about racism and discrimination in Russian Federation have shadowed the weeks leading up to the World Cup games, and the lawmaker's statement waded into racially-charged territory.
The Family, Women and Children Affairs Committee chairwoman warned that "nothing good will come out of. the inappropriate behavior of Russian women".
Urging women to marry "Russian citizens" instead, she said that children risked being "abandoned and just left with their mother" or being taken overseas by their fathers.

Asked if the World Cup could cause a spike in Russia's birth rate - a key goal for President Vladimir Putin - Pletnyova replied: 'We should be giving birth to our own children'.
The term was used during the Soviet era to describe non-white children conceived at worldwide events after relationships between Russian women and men from Africa, Latin America, or Asia. "I am no nationalist but nevertheless".
"Even if they get married, they will take them away, then she does not know how to get back", Pletnyova said during a radio interview, according to The Telegraph.
However, her comments drew both criticism and ridicule. "It doesn't matter what nationality they are (as long as) they are Russian citizens", Pletnyova said.
"We're not in America or Europe".
