Despite having his stamina to prove over a mile and a half, having never raced beyond an extended mile, Masar confirmed the optimism Appleby had in him getting the trip when bursting through under William Buick approaching the two-furlong marker. The word is that the favourite is an outstanding colt, and the horse that won the Dante (Roaring Lion) was very impressive.
I'm not too anxious about his draw in stall one, as there are only 12 runners and he's housed next to Knight To Behold who should give him a lovely tow into the race.
Soft ground isn't a problem for this big, strapping colt, who ran a cracker to finish just half a length behind Young Rascal in the Chester Vase last month, ironically the same position as Wings Of Eagles the previous year.
The big danger to Saxon Warrior has to be Dante victor Roaring Lion, who blew away a decent enough field in superb style in his four-and-half length success.
Masar is a homebred son of 2008 Derby victor New Approach, out of the Cape Cross mare Khawlah, who won the 2011 UAE Oaks Sponsored by Al Tayer Motors (G3) and UAE Derby Sponsored by the Saeed & Mohammed Al Naboodah Group (G2).
Appleby said that he had come to the race with minimal expectations of Masar being triumphant and that had helped, in hindsight, make the victory that bit sweeter along with the disappoitment of missing out on winning the Oaks on Friday when Wild Illusion had to be content with second.
"So I came here today very relaxed and just wanted the horse to do his best".

In 1970, Nijinsky became the first horse in 35 years to win the English Triple Crown; 48 years on and we're still waiting for another. It's an honorable achievement for all of us.
