US President Donald Trump says a planned summit with North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un is back on for June 12 in Singapore, after meeting with a senior envoy from Pyongyang. Hours later, Trump said the summit was potentially back on. "I think they're good". "We talked about ending the war", he said.
Trump cited increasingly bellicose statements from the North - and ignored messages about summit logistics - when he announced he was backing out of the summit in a strongly worded letter. "That was the wrong approach all along, and I think the president took the right approach by saying no to Iran and sitting down with North Korea and saying you have to stop". Defence chiefs, top officials and experts gathered here for the regional security forum wondered if the summit would be held in the same hotel.
"You people are going to have to travel, because you'll be in Singapore on June 12th", he told reporters awaiting word of the meeting.
The U.S. wants North Korea to completely abandon its nuclear weapons program and ballistic missile tests. The US has "hundreds of new sanctions that are ready to go" but isn't going to implement them while talks are ongoing.
Maybe that's just how he likes it. Moon, who lobbied hard for nuclear negotiations between Trump and Kim, received a letter of similar size from Kim during February's Winter Olympics where he expressed a desire for an inter-Korean summit.
"North Korea and the USA will be focusing on the issues around how to denuclearise and the time frame", said Jin Chang-soo, president of the Sejong Institute in Seongnam.
Gen Kim has previously served as chief of Pyongyang's top military intelligence agency, and was sanctioned twice by US and South Korea for his role in supporting North Korea's nuclear and missile programme in 2010 and 2016.

Iran's weekly light crude price surpasses $77
By the end of last month, both OECD and USA inventory levels were lower than the averages for April 2013 to April 2017. Brent recovered later in the week, however, when a Gulf source flagged that any rise in production would be gradual.
'Clear risk': Business groups say minimum wage rise could cost jobs
The FWC said previous minimum wage increases had failed to help families surviving on the payment. Liquor servers will make a minimum of $11.40 per hour, an increase of $1.30 per hour.
Three teams of officials in the U.S., Singapore, and the Korean demilitarized zone have been meeting this week on preparations for the summit.
The photo made rounds on social media, where theories abound why Kim would have sent Trump what seemed as a comically oversized letter.
Kim Yong Chol delivered a personal letter from Kim Jong Un to Trump. During a press appearance, Trump said it was a "very nice" and "very interesting" letter. "I don't think there will be an major economic investment from the South until we see some progress on the nuclear issue and global sanctions are lifted". "I purposely didn't open the letter".
Kim Yong Chol, who delivered the letter to Trump on Friday, also met with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
"We will calmly, and with expectation, watch the historic meeting in Singapore".
President Donald Trump should avoid the mistakes former President Barack Obama made with the Iran deal and submit any deal with North Korea for approval as a treaty, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy said Saturday.
