The North Korean leader "has a personal toilet that follows him around when he travels", said Lee Yun-keol, who worked in a North Korean Guard Command unit before coming to South Korea in 2005.
Offering a preview to reporters on the eve of the summit, Pompeo said it could provide "an unprecedented opportunity to change the trajectory of our relationship and bring peace and prosperity" to North Korea.
Only hours before the White House announcement, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had seemed to lower expectations for the meeting, which Trump had earlier predicted could potentially yield an on-the-spot deal to end the Korean War. That armistice has yet to be replaced with a peace treaty, leaving the peninsula in a technical state of war.
Trump responded to that commentary Tuesday on Twitter, saying: "The fact that I am having a meeting is a major loss for the USA, say the haters & losers".
The US president proclaimed "excitement in the air" as he arrived in Singapore yesterday as officials from both countries met to narrow differences on how to end a nuclear stand-off on the Korean peninsula.
Trump had tweeted over the weekend: "I am on my way to Singapore where we have a chance to achieve a truly wonderful result for North Korea and the World".
"It's a huge win for Kim Jong Un, who now - if nothing else - has the prestige and propaganda coup of meeting one on one with the president, while armed with a nuclear deterrent", said Michael Kovrig, a northeast Asia specialist at the International Crisis Group in Washington. President Trump described the nature of the summit as a "getting-to-know-you meeting plus" in remarks to reporters two weeks ago.
The North has presented Kim's sudden diplomatic overtures to the country's neighbours and the United States as a logical next step and completion of his plan to develop a credible nuclear deterrent in response to what Pyongyang says is a policy of "nuclear blackmail" by Washington. North Koreans found out that Kim had agreed to meet Trump months after the rest of the world, as government media refused to break the news.
So far, the United States has offered no indication that it has reached a substantive preliminary agreement with North Korea on how to achieve the "complete and verifiable and irreversible" denuclearization that Pompeo reconfirmed on Monday the United States is seeking.
Michael Kovrig, a senior adviser for northeast Asia at the International Crisis Group, said Pompeo's comment that Trump "recognised Chairman Kim's desire for security" signalled that the United States may offer formal security guarantees to Pyongyang in exchange for nuclear disarmament.
Trump traveled to Singapore from Canada, where he left the G7 summit early and alienated leaders with a refusal to agree to a post-meeting communique on trade policy.
The daylong summit will also include a working lunch and a larger meeting involving aides to both leaders, the White House said.
Kim has sought to overhaul his image this year in a bid to ease worldwide sanctions imposed after he tested nuclear bombs and long-range ballistic missiles.
After initial exchanges lasting around 40 minutes, Trump and Kim emerged, walking side-by-side through the colonnaded hotel before entering a meeting room, where they were joined by their most senior officials.
