The CDC report was released at a time of heightened attention to the issue with the suicide this week of fashion designer Kate Spade. Firearms were revealed to be the most common method of suicide by those with and without a known mental illness.
The report says that in 27 states, 54 percent of people who died by suicide did not have a known mental health condition - however, they note that individuals may have had mental health problems that were never diagnosed.
Adults ages 45 to 64 had the largest increase in the suicide rate, from 13.2 suicides per 100,000 people in 1999 to 19.2 suicides per 100,000 in 2016.
With regards to regional suicide rate increases, the Midwest reported particularly significant numbers.
