Google Translate has always been able to work offline for those traveling without a solid data connection, but there have been readily apparent drawbacks and limitations to that option.
Cattiau says said the team rebuilt Google Translate from the ground up within the past year and a half, which resulted in a "more flawless technology" than what they had build over the previous decade of Google Translate's existence. Like most machine-learning based systems they're partly magic, but in essence, they work by breaking out the act of translation to a contextual level-operating at the larger scale of phrases and sentences than mere words-then shuffling the result around for improved readability. Now that phones are more powerful and AI processing is happening on the phone itself, Google is removing that online requirement for NMT, so you'll get all the benefits right in the app itself, no data necessary. According to Google Translate Product Manager Julie Cattiau, the technology takes a nuanced approach by leveraging artificial intelligence to take a whole sentence into context instead of translating it piece-by-piece, making the translations better.
Now, how often will you need to use Google Translate without an internet connection? That makes translations of paragraphs and articles a lot smoother, the company said in a blog post.
