"What has been done before hasn't worked", Trump said, accusing "haters" of saying he was gifting Kim the meeting.
President Donald Trump said Saturday he would know "in the first minute" whether an upcoming summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un would be a success. "That's why I feel positive, because it makes so much sense".
"I really feel confident. It's a one-time shot", he said at a press conference, adding that the North Koreans had been working "very well with us" ahead of the summit.
The highly-anticipated meeting between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Kim Jong Un is scheduled for next Tuesday.
"I think that he's going to surprise on the upside", Trump said, adding that it "may not work out". "And if I think it won't happen I'm not going to waste my time, I'm not going to waste his time". "I don't want to waste his time", Trump said.
In an apparent bid to lower soaring expectations fueled partly by himself, Trump has already signaled the possibility that it may take more than one meeting with Kim to seal an ultimate agreement.
"I think within the first minute I'll know".
When asked about eventual normalization of ties, he said: "That is something I would hope to do that when everything is complete".

North Korea has acknowledged kidnapping her and taking her there but claimed, not very credibly, that she then committed suicide.
In his press conference Saturday, Trump compared what he described as a lack of action on the part of past USA leaders on North Korea with the "bad" trade deals they made with key allies, including Canada and France.
"He could take that nation with those great people and truly make it great", Trump said. It is hard to credibly suggest progress on weapons proliferation can be durable or verifiable if North Korea remains a completely closed and totalitarian state.
