With tens of thousands of people ending their own lives each year, suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the United States overall, and second most common way that those between 10 and 34 die.
The rise in suicide rates was highest in the central, northern region of the USA, with North Dakota, for example, seeing a 57.6 percent increase since 1999.
"This is a major public health problem but we know that prevention programs work and can be effective in reducing this tragedy", Dr. Anne Schuchat, CDC principal deputy director, told Fox News. "From individuals and communities to employers and healthcare professionals, everyone can play a role in efforts to help save lives and reverse this troubling rise in suicide". In the US, to nobody's surprise, firearms are the most commonly used method, accounting for 41 percent of suicides of people with known mental-health conditions, and 55 percent of those without, according to the CDC report. They found that relationship problems or loss (45.1% versus 39.6%), life stressors (50.5% versus 47.2%), and recent or impeding crises (32.9% versus 26%) were significantly more common among those without known mental health conditions than those with.
The new report also found that, among USA states and the District of Columbia, suicide rates varied fourfold in 2014-2016, from about 7 per 100,000 residents per year in Washington, D.C., to 29 per 100,000 residents per year in Montana. The most recent rates, for the years 2014 to 2016, ranged from a low of 6.9 per 100,000 residents per year in Washington, D.C., to a high of 29.2 per 100,000 residents in Montana. California had an increase of 14.8 percent - the fifth-smallest, after Delaware, Maryland, Florida and North Carolina. In Nevada, the only state that saw a decrease, the rate fell by 1 percent.

Most cases, Schuchat says, can't be traced back to one single cause or trigger.
"It's important that we think about this in more broad terms than just as a mental health condition", Schuchat says.
