U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un issued a joint statement after their Singapore meeting that reaffirmed the North's commitment to "work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula" and gave U.S. guarantees of security to North Korea.
There was considerable surprise across the region when Trump revealed, in a press conference, that he had agreed with Kim to end annual military exercises jointly conducted by South Korea and the U.S., which the United States president characterized as "expensive" and "provocative".
At the briefing, Pompeo reiterated that the shared goal of the US, South Korea and Japan is to get North Korea to denuclearize not only completely, but also irreversibly and verifiably.
The report was interpreted as meaning the United States would grant rewards - such as sanctions relief - to North Korea as North Korea take steps to denuclearize, a process which the U.S. had adamantly opposed. The drills help keep U.S. forces at a state of readiness in one of the world's most tense flashpoints.
The US term "complete, verifiable and irreversible disarmament", or CVID, does not appear in the declaration.
Kim understood getting rid of his nuclear arsenal needed to be done quickly and there would only be relief from stringent United Nations sanctions after its "complete denuclearisation", Pompeo said.
Trump's own chest-thumping tweet seemed reminiscent of the "Mission Accomplished" banner flown behind President George W. Bush in 2003 when he spoke aboard a Navy ship following the USA invasion of Iraq.
Trump has repeatedly touted his role in bringing the reclusive North Korea to the negotiating table, a feat that he says his predecessors were unable to pull off.

White House trade adviser apologizes for inappropriate comments on Canadian PM
But despite the war of words , Trump insisted at the press conference in Singapore that the pair still "have a good relationship". Canada is the U.S.'s largest trading partner, and the USA economy would struggle to make up for Canada's absence, Heyman noted.
Pentagon officials were not immediately able to provide any details about Mr Trump's remarks on suspending drills, something that the USA military has long resisted.
"The United States is our ally, so the joint military drills are still necessary to maintain our relationship with the US", said Lee Jae Sung, from Incheon.
"The President of the US expressed the possibility of suspending the US-South Korea joint military exercises...and, as progress is made from dialogue and negotiations, lifting sanctions against DPRK", said the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). They were providing economic and financial aid relief before the complete denuclearization had taken place.
As an "important party", China offered to assist North Korea and the United States in further talks and in implementing decisions made at the summit. In addition, the joint communique that the two leaders issued implicitly accepts that America has dropped its long-standing effort to achieve a reunified, democratic Korea.
Observers say the document lacks substance, in particular on how denuclearisation would be achieved.
Wang, however, appeared to issue a warning to the US on trade disputes, saying the nations have two options, one is "cooperation" and a "win-win" scenario.
"Today, we had a historic meeting and chose to leave the past behind", Kim said, speaking through a translator. Despite President Trump saying they would remain in place. "Anybody that takes over a situation like he did at 26 years of age and is able to run it and run it tough". "They just, essentially president for life, that's pretty good". But Trump was realistic enough to not put too much pressure on Kim. "And the issue is now, where do we go from here - whether we can maintain momentum from the summit and start putting flesh on those bones". I think that Michael Cohen is in a very, very bad spot" MSNBC reporter: "Detained immigrant children "effectively incarcerated" in Texas facility GOP chairwoman: "Anyone who doesn't support Trump "will be making a mistake" MORE evidently has no problem with the long-term survival of perhaps the most brutal dictatorship on the face of the earth.
