North Korea, which cancelled the talks earlier this month in a sign of re-emerging tensions, said the two leaders agreed to "meet frequently in the future". He said the "real danger" is not the rhetoric and theatrics surrounding the meeting but, rather, the substance: "What will happen at this meeting?"
In addition to the team on North Korea that Pompeo set up a year ago when he was Central Intelligence Agency director, he has now enlisted veteran U.S. diplomat Sung Kim to help in the process, a senior USA official said.
South Korean President Moon Jae-In (right) and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un emerge from their second meeting on the North Korean side of the demilitarised zone in Paju on Saturday.
Despite repeated references to "denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula" by the North, it remains unclear whether Kim will ever agree to fully abandon his nuclear arsenal.
Kim Jong-un’s outbursts saw the summit cancelled but now it appears to be on again
He said on Saturday the United States was still considering the 12 June date for the summit in Singapore.
"Let's be realistic. These summits take months not weeks to prepare", he said.
"I hope if the NK-US summit is successful, through the three-way summit, we can declare the end of the war", Moon said.
"This is how progress is made, and the best chance to have a summit, and one that yields meaningful outcomes", Narang said.
Moon is the only South Korean leader to have met a North Korean leader twice, both times in the DMZ, a symbol of unending hostilities after the Korean War ended in a truce, not a peace treaty.Читайте также: Facebook is asking users worldwide to review their privacy settings
Earlier this month, North Korea also released three US citizens―Kim Hak-song, Tony Kim and Kim Dong-chul―who had been detained in the country on charges of espionage and suspicion of "hostile acts".
Mr Trump's decision to pull the summit is understood to have followed comments from North Korean diplomat Choe Son Hui, who referred to US Vice-President Mike Pence as a "political dummy". Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said on CBS News's "Face the Nation". The daughter of a former premier, she is also thought to have direct access to Kim Jong Un. DPRK is the acronym for the North's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
Leading senators from both parties on Sunday scoffed at the notion that Kim would bargain away North Korea's nuclear deterrent, with some warning that his regime may seek significant concessions from the Trump administration in exchange for promises of arms reduction well into the future. North Korea was the first to waver, threatening on May 15 that the fate of the meeting could be in jeopardy due to the U.S.'s military exercises with North Korea.
Still, it might be able to narrow the gap.
(File) South Korean officials have confirmed that South Korean President Moon Jae-in has met with his North Korean counterpart.
Has the summit date changed?"It's moving along very nicely", he said. "South Korea summit, President Trump clearly emphasised that we may see not only the end of hostile relations but also economic cooperation if North Korea denuclearises", Mr. Moon said.
