Russian Federation interfered in the United States' 2016 presidential election with the intention of helping President Donald Trump and hurting his opponent Hillary Clinton, the bipartisan leaders of the Senate Intelligence Committee said Wednesday.
In an interview previous year with the Senate Judiciary Committee, Trump Jr. downplayed his father's role in the entire matter. They show that Trump Jr. says he doesn't remember ever discussing the Russian Federation investigation at all with his father.
The meeting is a part of an ongoing probe by the US Department of Justice into alleged Russian Federation meddling in 2016.
The meeting - and whether President Trump knew about it - has become a central focus of Mueller's investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election, as well as the congressional Russia investigations. The documents contain a record of closed-door committee interviews with five of the eight meeting attendees, including Trump Jr., Goldstone, Russian-American lobbyist Rinat Akhmetshin, translator Anatoli Samochornov and Ike Kaveladze, a Russian with ties to oligarch Aras Agalarov.
The Judiciary Committee's interviews with Goldstone, Trump Jr. and others involved in the June 9, 2016 Trump Tower meeting were released Wednesday morning.
In a list of findings, the Democrats say that Donald Trump Jr.'s willingness to take the meeting with Russian attorney Natalia Veselnitskaya "confirms that the Trump campaign was willing to accept Russia's assistance".
Later in his testimony, Trump Jr. repeatedly deemphasized his father's role in shaping how this information was conveyed to the press.
According to the transcripts, Trump Jr. also said he didn't think there was anything wrong with attending the Trump Tower meeting in which he was promised dirt on Hillary Clinton.

"I appreciate the opportunity to have assisted the Judiciary Committee in its inquiry", Trump Jr. said.
The White House has said the president was involved in drafting an initial statement after news of the meeting broke past year.
In addition, the transcripts reflect an aggressive Russian outreach to Trump both before and after the June 2016 meeting, including an effort to arrange a follow-up get-together that November with members of his transition team.
That, certainly, was one of the topics - but as Trump Jr's email chain revealed, the presidential son was initially more interested in learning what dirt the Russians might have on Mrs Clinton. The former Trump campaign chair is now under indictment by Robert Mueller on charges of money laundering and unregistered foreign lobbying conducted before he joined the Trump team. Browder, who renounced his US citizenship and now lives in the United Kingdom, was a leading advocate for the Magnitsky Act through which the US Congress imposed sanctions on Russian Federation for human rights violations.
The transcripts show the dissatisfaction of Trump Jr. and other campaign aides, including brother-in-law Jared Kushner, when the meeting failed to yield the harmful Clinton information they thought they'd get - as well as the increasing panic of one of the meeting participants who feared his reputation would be ruined for his role in having set it up.
"Jared Kushner, who is sitting next to me, appeared somewhat agitated by this and said, 'I really have no idea what you're talking about".
Did that cause Mr Goldstone to exaggerate what the Russians had to offer Mr Trump Jr as far as information on Hillary Clinton went?
"I believed it was a bad idea and that we shouldn't do it".
