Ferrari claims that a new tailor-made cabin is found inside, but hasn't issued any pictures of the SP38's cockpit. Imagine our collective glee, therefore, at the sight of the Ferrari SP38, the latest example of the expert handiwork at the automaker's One-Off program.
Ferrari also mentions that the exterior features a new three-layer red finish that gives the surface a much stronger sense of depth. The twin-turbo, twin-intercooler set-up of the award-winning 488 GTB inspired the team to reference the mighty F40 as an icon from which to instruct the project's general direction.
Stylistically, the vehicle concentrates its visual mass over the rear wheels, with a rear spoiler and engine cover reminiscent of the F40, with a wedge shape that narrows toward the front. On the side, the air scoop of the 488 GTB is completely concealed where the sheet metal folds in on itself from the low beltline on the door and into the rear wheelarch and three-quarter light.
The Ferrari SP38 has been revealed by Maranello as its most recent custom creation, with the road-legal one-off model being based on the 488 GTB.
There are no images of the SP38's interior at this point, although it's said to have its own unique trim, if not design. Gone, meanwhile, is the glass cover for the engine at the rear, with a flip-up carbon fiber assembly in its place.
The trailing edge of that spoiler flows into the rear wing, and then down to the diffuser at the bottom.
The SP38 carries the same 3.9-litre turbocharged engine as the 488 GTB, and performance figures have remain unchanged by the new body, meaning 661bhp and a top speed of 205mph.
Of course, the design influences of the SP38 also include other iconic Fezzas, such as the 308 GTB (think: the sleek lip of the front apron).
If you are lucky enough to hold tickets, the Ferrari SP38 will be unveiled this weekend at the Villa d'Este Concorso d'Elegance on Saturday 26 May 2018.
