A 19-year-old former student was shot by a police officer after arriving at Dixon High School with a weapon this morning.
A police chief says a school resource officer saved lives when he confronted an armed 19-year-old former student at a high school in northern IL.
"I could not be more proud of the police officer and the way he responded to the situation", Howell, Jr., said.
Officials are not confirming the identity of the suspect, but multiple sources tell Sauk Valley News that the shooter is Matt Milby, a former student who was recently expelled from the school. "When shots rang out through the hallway of the school, he charged toward the suspect and confronted him head-on and because of this heroic action, countless lives were saved".
Howell said the suspect had fired several shots near school gym, where the resource officer confronted him.

Howell praised the officer for saving lives.
"A tragedy was averted today in Dixon because a police officer put his life on the line to protect his fellow citizens", Roselieb said. The officer, whose identity had not yet been released, was hailed as a hero for stopping the shooter.
Armed school resource officers have been in the headlines since the February 14 massacre of 17 teens and educators at a Parkland, Florida, high school, where an on-duty resource officer did not confront the gunman.
Howell commended the quick response of the school resource office for his fast response. The high school remains the only school on lockdown.
Dixon police believe the suspect acted alone and say there is no further threat to the safety of students and staff. There were no injuries to staff, students or members of the community.
"It could have been a lot worse", Simonton said.
