Early Saturday, FBI agents were seen at a blue trailer home believed to be connected to the suspect.
A top county official said the student exchanged "a lot of firepower" with police before he surrendered.
Meanwhile, students were being let back inside Santa Fe High School to gather belongings they abandoned when the gunfire began.
Grief counselors and comfort dogs were on hand at a local church where the Red Cross had opened a Family Assistance Center for those affected by the shooting.
The gunman told police he avoided students he liked "so he could have his story told". It is also unclear why the gunman targeted the art class.
Her father said: "I kept calling her and sent her messages on WhatsApp. We are gratified by the public comments made by other Santa Fe High School students that show Dimitri as we know him: a smart, quiet, sweet boy", the family said in a statement.
