Referring to the portrait of Pakistan's Quaid-e-Azam, Haryana Finance Minister Captain Abhimanyu said that AMU has a picture of the person "who broke the nation into pieces", but does not have any portrait of Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh, claiming that the Jat king had "donated" the land for the university.
A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, Abhimanyu said on Sunday that the AMU should be renamed Raja Mahendra Pratap Vishwavidyalaya after Jat king Mahendra Pratap Singh.
According to an Indian Express report, addressing a gathering at the foundation-laying ceremony of Jat Dharamshala in Haryana's Rewari on Sunday, Abhimanyu claimed that the Jat king's "contribution in the field of education can not be forgotten".
"What can be sadder than the fact that no image of Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh has been displayed in the university". Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh's contribution in the field of education can not be forgotten, he added. He was the president of the first Provisional Government of India which was formed in Kabul on 1 December 1915.
The King had leased 3.04 acres of land to AMU in 1929 at a rate of Rs. 2 per annum, according to the university website.
"This is the need of the hour: that the university be renamed after him".
Post Independence, Singh became the president of All India Jat Mahasabha.
