There was also this cryptic news brief from the New York Times (4/6/18): "Sporadic rifle fire from the Israeli side of the Gaza border made clear that the Palestinian protests could elicit the sort of response that killed 20 people a week ago".
The Islamic militant group Hamas that rules Gaza is now leading a campaign of mass protests at the border and 26 Palestinians have been killed since it began two weeks ago.
Palestinian security sources in Gaza said the Israeli strikes hit a base in Jabalia belonging to Ezzedine Al Qassam Brigades, Hamas' armed wing, and farmland near Beit Lahiya, causing damages but no injuries. But Hamas stopped short of claiming him as one of its own, as Hamas has written on banners and posters for others killed on the border during recent protests.
Yaser Murtaja, the co-founder of Ain Media, was shot as he filmed protests at the border fence on Friday. When gunmen shot at the aircraft, they were fired upon, the Israeli military said.
The strike was in response to an explosive device that was detonated against an Israeli army engineering vehicle, according to the Israel Defense Forces.
Murtaja was about 300 yards away from the Israeli border fence filming Palestinians burning tires when Israeli soldiers shot him, said Palestinian photographer Rushdi Serraj, who worked with Murtaja and was with him when he was shot.
The machine gun fire also set off sirens in southern Israel, the army said. It says it has no choice but to use live ammunition against violent "rioters". He was hit in the leg, the statement said.

"In the video they say they killed me", said Abu Daqqa.
The paper uses 30 words and still fails to convey the critical information that can be communicated in seven words: Israel kills nine Palestinian protesters in Gaza.
"The IDF views the Hamas terrorist organization as responsible for all incidents that take place in the Strip or coming from it and will not allow a terrorist group to turn the border area to into a combat zone", the army said in a statement.
The International Criminal Court's prosecutor, Fatou Bensouda, warned both Israel and Hamas that each could be committing crimes - as if a terror group using violence to breach a border and a nation defending itself are equivalent.
On April 1, Avigdor Lieberman, Israeli defence minister, rejected calls for an independent investigation into the killings.
The video was met with outrage internationally and from Palestinians and Israelis.
